So it's down to the Sens vs the Sabres in the East.

Like many Sens fans, I've been in awe of the Devils since the hard fought '03 Eastern Conference Final. The inexperienced Sens were down 3-1 in the series, not unexpected against a Cup favorite.  But something funny happened - the Sens calmed down, overachieved, and won the next 2 games. The 7th game was a nail biter, won by a veteran Devils squad who went on to hoist The Cup.

The Sens had never played so well. There was the feeling that this was a breakout moment, a hint of greatness to come.

Of course the Sens haven't shown anything resembling postseason greatness since '03.

So I was unhappy to see the Sens play the Devils this year because they still, quite frankly, scare the fuck out of me.

Sure, Ottawa beat the Penguins like a government mule, and I was a little nervous about the much-hyped Pens before that series, but we're talking about the New Jersey Devils!

'07 was nothing like '03. The Devils are a little older, and their defence isn't as good. Brodeur gets a lot of flak for not stealing every game, but he gave the Devils a chance to win every night - not his fault they can't score. Some wisenheimer suggested putting Brodeur on the point during powerplays so he could chip in a goal or 2.

Today's Sens are less offensively talented then '03, but teamwork, toughness, and guts are vastly improved.

For me the icing on the cake was watching the Sens trap the Devils into the ground for the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period.

The trap is horrendously boring to watch, but It Just Works. Right, Devils?

I was hoping the Rangers could stay alive today to force a bruising and punishing game 7, preferably settled in triple overtime. Oh well.

The Sabres scare me, but I'm told that they haven't yet played to their potential this postseason.

The Senators are healthy, and they are playing to potential. I've never seen them play so well, so consistently, so hard.

Should be a helluva series.

not really, but I didn't want the Canadians to feel left out.

I have to admit . . . by slozo (4.00 / 1) #2 Mon May 07, 2007 at 07:31:32 AM EST
. . . well, hate to admit, really - the Sens are playing well right now. And Emery has been outstanding, which has been a small surprise for most hockey observers, including myself.

But they have become essentially a one line team, dangerous as you go deeper and deeper into the playoffs. If the ASH line gets shut down, it's over. On the other hand, Buffalo continues to roll out three dangerous scoring lines over and over again. Ottawa's defence is solid; but they haven't come up against a scoring machine like this yet. No nervous or untested youngsters here like in Pittsburgh, either. And Miller has been playing pretty well for Buffalo, proving his mettle against the Rangers by standing very tall in a few of those low scoring games.

I had predicted NJ in 6 or 7 over Ottawa, mainly because of Emery. He ended up playing as well or better than Brodeur, and was the reason for their great success. He will need to totally steal two games, I think, for this series to go the distance.

PREDICTION: Buffalo in 6 games.

Aside - I live in Toronto. I am a big fan of hockey in general, no just a Leafs fan. The only Canadian team I refuse to support is Ottawa.

re: 1 line team

Ottawa had tons of secondary scoring against the Pens, admittedly less so against the best defensive team in the league. We'll see what the Sabres defence can do.

And yes, it could easily come down to goaltending.

I am going for the Senators for the rest of the by cam (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon May 07, 2007 at 07:54:35 AM EST
way. They play the best brand of hockey at the moment - east or west. Buffalo were lucky to get past the Rangers. They had a few get out of jail free cards (like the OT the other day) and a lot of the bounces and calls were going their way (Drury's goal yesterday was off a bogus powerplay call). I don't think Buffalo was that impressive and the Rangers largely shut them down, while still managing to match them for speed and firepower. Buffalo also didn't like to come into the slot and mix it up with the Ranger's defencemen, they kind of got around that yesterday by doing one-timers from the boards in order to get the Ranger's defencemen to lose their poise (and it worked a couple of times). But they way the Senators have been playing, Buffalo is not going to want to go into the slot or infront of the goal with them either. I think Buffalo is going to lose this, the Rangers and Sabres series should have been seven games, Buffalo was a bit lucky to get through after five.

the Hockey Gods have spoken by clover kicker (4.00 / 1) #5 Mon May 07, 2007 at 08:15:54 AM EST
This was 100% caused by your sweep predictions.

I was going to make a Hockey Gods dupe account to tease you, but didn't get around to it.

I find the Sabres . . . by slozo (2.00 / 0) #10 Mon May 07, 2007 at 04:46:49 PM EST
. . . by FAR the most exciting team to watch right now, followed by the San Jose Sharks.

You willing to wager on the BUF/OTT series?

I barrack for the Rangers by cam (2.00 / 0) #12 Mon May 07, 2007 at 11:39:28 PM EST
so have no real horse the rest of the way. How many goals do you think Buffalo will score from infront of the net? Or even how much presence they will have there?

Drury is always there . . . by slozo (2.00 / 0) #13 Tue May 08, 2007 at 08:00:35 AM EST
. . . and I disagree with your take on this. Besides, they are a team full of shooting talent that generally doesn't need to manufacture goals in this way. To me, the question is moot - the better one might be how many goals can Ottawa keep them to, and can anyone else produce from Ottawa if the big line gets shut down? Can Ottawa defend against a swarming Buffalo attack that comes at you in waves? Will Emery fall to pieces after an inevitable blowout loss?

Emery by clover kicker (2.00 / 0) #14 Tue May 08, 2007 at 02:45:12 PM EST
If the fender bender taught us anything about Emery, he doesn't let yesterday's fuck-ups bother him.

most of the rangers games were 2-1 by cam (2.00 / 0) #16 Tue May 08, 2007 at 04:23:47 PM EST
and the last game which was a shoot-out was a one goal difference until the final minute. Buffalo got shut down, and part of it was they didnt want to mix it up with the Ranger's defencemen in the slot. The Senators have pretty good and physical defence too, I expect they will mimic how the Rangers played them. Buffalo wasnt explosive in the Rangers series, and when it did open up the Rangers managed to match them for goals. The Senators will too; they have more scoring talent than the Rangers do.

"Most" being three 2-1 games . . . by slozo (2.00 / 0) #18 Tue May 08, 2007 at 04:58:39 PM EST
. . . the other three being 5-2, 3-2, 5-4. Yes, the Rangers were hot, their goalie was hot as hell too, and they played great defence against Buffalo. But Buffalo still had two 5 goal games, which beats all other playoff teams still in the race. Buffalo also kept the Rangers to less goals than the Sens did Jersey . . . even though I believe during the regular season Jersey scored 216, NYR 246.

I still haven't heard an answer on a wager?

All but one was a 1 goal game by cam (2.00 / 0) #19 Wed May 09, 2007 at 07:44:09 AM EST
Rangers matched them, and after the first game they made Buffalo play how the Rangers wanted. Buffalo had a get out of jail free cards, one where they won the overtime, and the other where they lost it. I think the Senators, and they way they are playing, are going to force Buffalo to play how they want to more than the Rangers are. Senators are a better team than the Rangers, and Buffalo struggled against NY, a few bounces the other way, and the Rangers would have got through.

not too fired up about western conference by sasquatchan (4.00 / 1) #7 Mon May 07, 2007 at 01:31:45 PM EST
still rooting to SJ over detroit.. we'll see.. I find detroit and NJ similar -- older teams, lotsa vets, etc.

Curious where Scott Gomez will go as a free agent next year.

Agreed -- the trap is a boring game, no fun to watch at all, but interesting to see the tables turned on NJ. Plus, Sens have a black man in goal. A black man playing hockey ? Who would have through such a thing... ;)

the west by clover kicker (4.00 / 1) #8 Mon May 07, 2007 at 01:50:47 PM EST
I don't like the new reg. season schedule, I've hardly watched the western teams play. I don't really know who's good, or what their style is :(

Gomez might be a better fit on a team that allows their forwards to enter the other team's zone...

let's go redwings by alprazolam (4.00 / 1) #9 Mon May 07, 2007 at 04:24:23 PM EST
so you think trapping will work against zetterberg, datsyuk, and holmstrom?

because i don't.

honestly, I have no idea by clover kicker (2.00 / 0) #11 Mon May 07, 2007 at 06:55:02 PM EST
In another comment I mentioned not liking the new schedule, I haven't watched the Red Wings in a couple of years now. They might as well be in another league for all we see them.

I did a quick google and saw that the trap worked well against the Red Wings :) once upon a time but I'm far to lazy to check the rosters to see if anyone from '95 is still playing for either team.

re: the trap, the Sens don't normally play the trap, maybe they were just trying to rub the Devils' nose in it or something.

[ Parent ]

Many teams play the trap still . . . by slozo (2.00 / 0) #15 Tue May 08, 2007 at 03:34:56 PM EST
. . . it's just a modified version of it. The left wing lock is often employed by the Sens when they have a lead . . .

Yeah, I hate the new schedule too.

PREDICTION: Anaheim in 5. Maybe 6, since Hasek is playing well.
