... happened this day. --Diary of King George III, July 4, 1776

We are on vacation. :-)

So yesterday was busy waiting. Packed up the previous evening; rose at more or less the usual time, poured fabulous amounts of fresh food into the cat bowls, took the dogs and the suitcases in the car, and set out. Forty-five minutes later, we checked the dogs into "camp" where they'll be safe and looked-after for a week.

Thence to Manchester, NH, and Southwest Airlines, connecting via Chicago/Midway to Denver, where my brother was waiting for us in the cell-phone lot.

The 'rents are getting along; a little older and a little slower each year. Their 60th wedding anniversary was this past spring, and we didn't make the trip then. It's good to see them. And to see the place SW of Denver where they've lived for 30 or 35 years, in the summertime. The innovation to make the house more user-friendly is chair-lifts on the two staircases, which are really quite nifty. In addition to transporting themselves up and down stairs, they use it for bringing the groceries up (entrance is in the basement, and the kitchen is on the main floor).

We went for a bit of a hike this morning, and toxicfur got some rather wonderful pictures of the wildness just over the back lot line (in Pike National Forest). We're hoping to do more of that in the coming days. And perhaps to visit Boulder, where I grew up, and where toxicfur has never been.

My brother is bringing his family over for dinner, I think, tomorrow, and a time or two over the weekend. It's always fun to see the nieces and nephew.

The silence is really quite wonderful. It's very easy to hear the bloodhound (who lives half a mile away) when he has a mind to bay (not often). I'm hoping the clouds clear tonight so I can see the 108 stars they have here.

I downloaded firefox 3.0 today for my iBook, and I'm still getting used to it. There is no scroll bar in this text entry box, for example.

Where is the dysfunction?

I demand dysfunction!

My main problem with FF 3 is that the little green "go" triangle to the right of the address bar is gone. :< I use that a lot in testing my apps. It's instinct. I can't get used to going left to that reload button.

that their favorite news channel is Fox?

Aside from that little, um, idiosyncracy, it's really quite amazing how very little drama there is here. It feels almost unnatural. ;-)

That is all.

What's a decent Wittgenstein biography? The Ray Monk one is everywhere but I've heard one of the older ones is better?

can't say I'm an expert ... by BlueOregon (2.00 / 0) #11 Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 11:43:35 PM EST
... on the Wittgenstein bios, but since the Monk has become the main reference point what I would recommend is reading at least the first bit of Monk to get his perspective and why he chooses it.

As his argument goes, there are those who produce Wittenstein biographies, but with little regard for or understanding of his works, and then there are many introductory texts (and more difficult commentaries) on Wittgenstein's works, but they're divorced from his life, and Monk states as his goal to bridge these two: "I hope to make it clear how this work came from the man, to show — what many who read Wittgenstein's work instinctively feel — the unity of his philosophical concerns with his emotional and spiritual life." (xviii)

Perhaps ni could give a better assessment of the other Wittgenstein biographies out there, but Monk does provide a bibliography. I noted a work by A.J. Ayer (Wittgenstein, 1985) there, for example (and Ayer is a recognizable student of Wittgenstein and famous [dead] philosopher in his own right), as well as, say, Baker's Wittgenstein, Frege and the Vienna Circle (1988) for something that is more contextual. I've heard good things about Norman Malcolm's Ludwig Wittgenstein: A Memoir (Oxford University Press, 1984). I've been interested in reading Wittgenstein's Poker, but haven't gotten to it. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Sounds fair by Scrymarch (2.00 / 0) #12 Sat Jul 26, 2008 at 09:43:28 AM EST
As I recall reviewers seem to think Monk is somewhere between decent and great, and it would presumably also have the most up to date source material, if any has come to light late. It's for interest rather than any professional reason. Otherwise Bartley's seems a bit notorious due to its lurid content from apparently weak sources.

I read Janik and Toulmin's Wittgenstein's Vienna last year and that was pretty cool, though hard work because I didn't have as much of the historical context coming in as I might have.

Thanks.

Says:
George III's papers do not include a diary. The TV series The X-Files uses a fictional anecdote that George III's diary entry on July 4, 1776 read: "Nothing important happened today", as a plot device and as the title of its final season premiere.

from NPR's annual 4th of July reading of the Declaration of Independence. I guess they shouldn't watch so much X-files, eh?

It's apparently based on a true-ish story about Louis XVI.

I finished Daughter of Time, that you and toxicfur recommended the other day. Fun read.
