Print Story Two things.

Both are Kellnerin's fault, in an oblique sort of way. One, because it's a commuting story, and two because for a non-drinker, she knows how to get me hooked on a cocktail.

Commuting

I was dashing off to the subway today because $assistant had a last-minute question about $annoying_project. So I'm walking down a busy street in Boston's Chinatown, and this SUV pulls over. A dark-haired man in his early 30s with fashionable stubble, calls to me from his open window in a European accent. He's in the passenger seat, and another, less attractive man is in the driver's seat.

Him: Excuse me. Excuse me. So sorry.
Me: Yes? [I was hoping like hell he wasn't going to ask for directions to something in a different part of Boston, since I have no idea how to give people driving directions to anywhere in Boston, like, say, Jamaica Plain].
Him: Yes. We want to go to New York?
Me, relieved: Oh! So what you want to do is to go down this street you're on now, and follow the directions for the Mass Pike. Highway 90, going west.
Him: Yes, but we have thees? [he holds up his GPS, which, I note, is a much nicer version of the GPS I have]. We need this [he points at the blank, asking for State/Province]. What is the state?
Me: Uh, New York. [I didn't want to seem like a smartass, so I explained]. New York City is in the state of New York.
Him, rolling his eyes at his friend: Oh, New York is the state.
Me: And the city.

They thanked me and drove off. I missed the bus my subway delivers me to by five minutes. They probably didn't cause me to miss the bus (that would be $annoying_project's fault), and they made me smile. I'm not sure I'd know what county or whatever-it's-called London or Paris or Berlin are in, if I needed to use a GPS. At least I know that Toronto is in Ontario, though.

Drinking

I've had two Dark & Stormies tonight. I am about to make a third. This really is Kellnerin's fault, because she brought ginger beer to the party with blixco.

"I should've brought some Black Seal rum, too," she said. "And you could've made Dark & Stormies." I'd never heard of a Dark & Stormy, but it seemed like a perfectly literary thing to drink, and I was intrigued. With the very recent announcement of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest "winners," tonight seemed an excellent night to mix the drinks and partake of one too many. And oh, my, they're delicious. Mmmm, Bermuda rum. Mmmm, Bermuda ginger beer.

Sybilla has a name, but neither of the cars do. Perhaps it's because the GPS box has a voice and a snooty manner.

I am happy by Kellnerin (4.00 / 1) #3 Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:25:12 PM EST
to take the credit and/or blame for both these items.

I first met Dark & Stormies in ice cream form, actually (and it was darn tasty), only later discovering its beverage origins. Glad you enjoyed -- your timing was inspired.

Kellnerin deserves credit for all things good, pretty much, especially if they have to do with commuting stories, and blame for some bad things, just for the sake of balance.

Jersey City by johnny (4.00 / 1) #5 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 12:10:10 AM EST
is in New Jersey (NB: not "Jersey"); Massachusetts City is in noplace, because it doesn't exist, and Florida (the town), is in Massachusetts too. Kansas City, however, remains the toughest of them all. That one's a real head-scratcher.

There is a Delaware City in Delaware by yankeehack (4.00 / 2) #6 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 12:24:51 AM EST
but the real head scratcher is Delaware County, Pennsylvania which borders to the south -- you guessed it, Delaware the state.

The ginger ale variant by notafurry (4.00 / 2) #9 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 02:57:34 AM EST
Is a bitch to get right, you need one that's sharp without being bitter and the rum has to match.

Black Seal rum is good and the traditional favorite for Dark & Stormies, but for ginger ale the best combo I've found is Stewart's (easy to get in Seattle) and Appleton or Mount Gay with Mount Gay being my preferred choice. In fact at the moment it's my choice of rum, period, even in coke (though that's a shameful waste of good rum.)

I found a bottle marked down as a promotion at the local liquor store on the reservation (aka the real liquor store). With the markdown it was $1 more than the same bottle of Appleton... which is not cheap rum. ;)

There's no further subdivision than that.

The city of London, however, is the smallest city in the UK by far, with 1500 residents. It is in London.

Good to know. by toxicfur (2.00 / 0) #14 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 09:42:47 AM EST
I knew that the city of London is actually tiny (though I didn't know it had so few residents), but I didn't know at all that it was just London, with no county or whatever.

And it's delicious. Kellnerin brought Barritt's ginger beer, which is apparently traditional for the Caribbean version of Dark & Stormies. I'll have to see if we have any of the Bundaberg stuff in our liquor store.

Yeah by Scrymarch (4.00 / 1) #21 Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 11:49:49 AM EST
I'm not a real rum fiend actually so probably couldn't tell the difference anyway :)

Bundaberg Rum has a polar bear on the label, a species not commonly sighted in the city of Bundaberg, which is slightly south of the Tropic of Capricorn, unless, perhaps, one has consumed large amounts of the contents of the bottle.

The ginger beer is a good brand though, cloudy, even has little ginger dregs in the bottom of the glass bottle.
